Occupational Therapy

"Occupational therapy. Hopeless into hope. Can’t into can. Impossible into possible." Valerie Pena, OTR

Our occupational therapists can complete home safety evaluations or offer consultation for increasing independence with activities of daily living such as bathing or dressing. They can also help you find new ways of doing desired activities as you are going through treatment and beyond, through activity modification or adaptive equipment.

Occupational therapy is a profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities. Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health and attain a healthy lifestyle. They promote health, and teach compensatory strategies that will allow you to live with injury, illness or disability. Occupational therapy practitioners use a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment and/or task to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team. It is an evidence-based practice deeply rooted in science. Our occupational therapists at Alpha Rehabilitation provide, direct, one-on-one treatment sessions in order to promote optimal therapeutic outcomes. Occupational Therapy Questions?

  • What does an occupational therapist help patients to do?
  • How long does an occupational therapy assessment take?
  • When should I ask for an OT referral?
Broadly, this means that occupational therapists are responsible for helping patients develop, recover, improve in regards to a condition or injury, as well as maintain the skills needed to execute daily activities. Occupational therapists help patients improve their fine and basic motor skills, strength, dexterity, and their range of motion. Even small improvements in these areas can make all the difference when it comes to completing an everyday task.
A typical occupational therapy functional assessment lasts between 1.0 and 2.5 hours. Factors like the complexity and the capacity of the client may impact the duration.
If a person shows a decrease in daily function, an OT assessment can determine if occupational therapy is right for them. An assessment may be helpful if a person has had an accident or a change in health status and shows any of these signs:
  • They have not returned to work, school, volunteering or other pre-accident roles.
  • They struggle to care for themselves, their family or their home.
  • Despite other treatments, they are still recovering slowly or not at all.
