Occupational Therapy

Home Safety

Greater attention must be given to our elderly population, so they may age-in-place and safely in their homes. As physical abilities change with age, it may become more difficult to manage a homesafely. It is very important to evaluate your home and whether it supports your ability to carry out everyday activities safely. When an occupational therapist assesses for home safety, they may perform an assessment of the patient's daily routine and discuss what and how certain tasks may be difficult to perform. They may also assess the client's motor skills, endurance, coordination and balance/strength.

Occupational therapy may evaluate a client for adaptive equipment. Adaptive equipment, or adaptive devices, are specifically designed to improve or maintain someone's functional participation in activities of daily living and mobility.
