Lymphedema Treatment

Lymphedema is an abnormal collection of protein-rich fluid in the superficial tissues. It causes swelling, usually in the arm(s) or leg(s) and occasionally in other parts of the body. If left untreated, it can lead to infections, limb "heaviness", decreased range of motion and strength, and diminished quality of life. Lymphedema caused from idiopathic (unknown) causes is called primary lymphedema. Lymphedema that develops as a result of surgery, radiation, infection or trauma is called secondary or acquired lymphedema. It can develop immediately post-operatively, or weeks, months or even years later.

Signs or symptoms include a full sensation in the limb(s), skin feeling tight, decreased flexibility in the hand, wrist or ankle, difficulty fitting into clothing in one specific area or ring/wrist watch/bracelet tightness. If you notice persistent swelling, it is important that you seek medical advice as early diagnosis and treatment improves the prognosis and the condition.
